“Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.”
When I started this class, I figured I would just be learning the basics of PR. Now that the semester is almost over, I have learned so much more. Public Relations is more than just a simple definition, especially if you take into consideration all the directions you can go with it. There is corporate, entertainment, crisis management and various other types of PR.
The other important thing I learned was the direction PR is moving in. While it was important to learn the difference between Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism and Marketing; it was also important to realize that all of these fields are increasingly overlapping in certain industries.
With PR, there are so many directions you can go in–and I’ll admit that is a comforting fact to be aware of. It’s also such an interactive industry thanks to social media, contests, special events, and other factors that are introduced as our society evolves.
My favorite part about this class was how relevant it was to what was going on around us. We looked at PR campaigns for current events and other subjects we were familiar with. Being able to apply what we were learning to the issues and companies that we experienced in our day-to-day lives made everything that much more helpful.
Analyzing campaigns to look at success and failures was a great way to step into this field. By doing this, it helped me get a better grasp of public relations and affirm that this is the direction I want to go and the industry that I want to be a part of.
